Threats of Identity: Celebrating Yucatán's Embroidery Heritage at Mérida English Library
The Mérida English Library (MEL), in collaboration with the Yucatán State Embroidery Council (Consejo Estatal de Bordadoras), is honored to host a special cultural celebration recognizing the artistry and living traditions of Yucatán's embroiderers.
Although International Embroidery Day is celebrated each year on July 30, we are delighted to commemorate the occasion on Saturday, August 8, by bringing together artisans, community members, and visitors for a morning dedicated to one of Yucatán's most treasured cultural expressions.
Yucatán is recognized as one of Mexico's most important centers of traditional hand embroidery, with an extraordinary diversity of techniques that have been preserved and passed down through generations.
The region is home to more than 34 traditional hand-embroidery techniques, including Chuuy K'aab (cross-stitch), Xokbil Chuuy, Xmanikté, and many others. Each stitch reflects centuries of knowledge, creativity, and cultural identity, transforming textiles into expressions of history and community.

Thirteen members of the Yucatán State Embroidery Council will join us at MEL to share both their work and their stories.
Throughout the morning, visitors will have the opportunity to:

A Unique Fashion Show
At 10:30 AM, guests will enjoy an exclusive fashion show featuring embroidered garments that were previously exhibited at ORIGINAL, the Mexican Textile Art Gathering held in Mérida in October 2025.
For this special event, these extraordinary pieces will once again take center stage—this time in the welcoming setting of MEL offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of traditional embroidery up close.
This celebration is also an opportunity to support the families and communities behind these traditions.
Many of the artisans will be accompanied by family members who will offer locally produced goods from their communities, including natural Yucatán honey and other regional products. By supporting these small producers, visitors help strengthen the local economies that sustain these remarkable cultural traditions.
