Painting Classes for Children and Adults

Julie Marie Hoey will offer acrylic painting classes at MEL starting Monday January 12, 2026. She offers a six-week session, with classes for adults beginning at 9:30 AM, followed by classes for children at 11:15 AM. Each class is 90 minutes.

Participants may register for all six weeks, or may elect to register for four classes based on their skill level. While classes are appropriate for all levels of ability and experience, beginning and intermediate students may choose the first four weeks, and more advanced students may decide to wait until the third session and attend only the last four weeks.

Classes will begin with exercises in the following; color theory (complementary colors, blending, mixing and values exploration) form and perspective (how everything is a basic shape and physical and atmospheric perspective), lighting and tone (softer versus bright lighting and reflective lighting) and then moving onto working on a painting.

Julie Marie will supply canvas paper for practice exercises, but students will bring their own supplies and brushes. Art supplies can be purchased at Arqline. There are several in Mérida. Here is a list:

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Julie Marie Hoey is an award-winning artist and poet. Her artwork along with her poetry has been published in anthologies and journals, has exhibited nationally and lives in collections worldwide.

Julie Marie’s work comes from a place of joy as well as life experiences. Her quest in depicting nature with words or paint is to find solace and to embrace storms. She is drawn to the skies, towards the heavens. Here she discovers she can convey her sense of home or her battling of demons. Her visual work and writing are mainly nature based and spiritual. Julie Marie feels possibility when creating. She listens to the rhythms of the paint or the words. She lets her brush or pen guide. Julie Marie looks for the heart of the matter that she isn’t always aware of until in the act of creating. Her mind begins the journey. Her spirit, soul, brush and pen complete it.
