Modern Art History of México - Workshop by Raúl Gasque
A workshop designed to learn through theory and art practice. This workshop is developed in five classes. In each, the student will learn details of the history of modern art in Mexico starring the artists who shaped that era.
The course is based on chapters in which the student will be able to review and learn the gestures of representative artists that to this day resonate throughout Mexico. The artists that encompass this class are considered some of the most representative of the modern era in Mexico’s art. Each class lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Details and Method:
The workshop is divided into two segments: First is the theory class. Raúl will dissect the artists seen in class. Photographs and paintings will be shown through the projector, as well as videos and excerpts from books. Then, the hands-on workshop will start under the influence of selected music and materials the artworks will be created.
Art Supplies such as Clay, acrylic paint, and pastels are included.
The five sessions will cover these artists:
First Session: The Foundations of a Modern Mexico in Art - Saturnino Herran and Pedro Guerra. (November 6th)
Second Session: Inventing a national legend - Diego Rivera, Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, and Octavio Paz. (November 13th)
Third Session: The Outcasts - Doctor Atl, Nina Moretti, Alice Rahon, and Nahui Olin. (November 21st)
Fourth Session : Ellas - María Izquierdo and Frida Khalo. (November 27th)
Fifth Session: Transgressions on the re-evolution - Tamayo, Buuel, and Vlady. (December 5th)

Bio:
Raúl Gasque is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist and art educator who works with performance, abstract expressionism, photography, and text. His practice is a continuous exploration of issues related to storytelling, psychology, human development, and social science from a non-conventional angle.
As an art educator, Raúl Gasque has worked in different environments and institutions. His experience as an art teacher took him to develop workshops at the National Institute of Arts in Mexico, The Peace Nobel Prize Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation in Guatemala, Hungkuang University in Taichung, and the Mexican Cultural and Trade Office in Taiwan. Also, Gasque has given conferences in prestigious universities and institutions such as the Asian Center for Journalism of the Ateneo University in Manila, La Hydra in Mexico City, Lightbox Center, and National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan.
