Maayat’aan: Yucatecan Maya Language Classes Coming to MEL
The Mérida English Library is pleased to announce a new educational opportunity for our community: Maayat’aan: Yucatecan Maya Language Class — Beginner Level, offered in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY).
This new program comes in response to the significant interest expressed by members of the MEL community, including the feedback received through our recent community survey. We are grateful to everyone who shared their ideas and helped us identify new opportunities for learning and cultural engagement at the Library.
Beginning in January, MEL will welcome a small group of students for an introductory course in Maayat’aan, the Yucatecan Maya language. Designed for beginners with no previous knowledge of the language, the course will introduce participants to its basic foundations while placing particular emphasis on practical communication and introductory conversation.
The academic program and instructors will be provided by UADY’s language program specifically for the MEL community. The course will be taught by an instructor whose native language is Maayat’aan, giving participants the opportunity to learn directly from a native speaker and to approach the language within the cultural and linguistic context in which it continues to be spoken today.
Maayat’aan remains an important living language in Yucatán and an essential part of the region’s cultural heritage. Through this collaboration, MEL hopes to create another space where members of our diverse community can deepen their understanding of Yucatán while developing practical language skills and engaging more closely with the culture and communities around them.

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning January 5, 2027
Duration: 40 hours — 20 two-hour sessions
Course period: January through March 2027
Introductory price: $3,000 MXN
Class size: Maximum of 12 participants
Because this first group will be limited to only 12 participants, advance registration is strongly encouraged. Those interested in joining the course are invited to register before January to secure their place and take advantage of the introductory price.
MEL is very pleased to begin this collaboration with UADY and to add Maayat’aan to the educational opportunities available to our community. We look forward to welcoming our first group of students in January.
