Hosts wanted! - Conversaciones Con Amigos
For more than 20 years, the Mérida English Library has hosted one of its most beloved community programs: Conversaciones con Amigos.
What began as a simple opportunity to practice English and Spanish has grown into a welcoming space where local residents, expats, and visitors from around the world come together to share ideas, practice a second language, and make new friends.
Every Monday at 7:00 pm, participants gather on the MEL patio and join small groups of five or six people. After a brief welcome, we introduce a suggested conversation topic and let the discussions begin.
And that’s where our wonderful hosts come in!
What Does a Host Do?
Hosts are volunteers who help guide the conversation at each table. Their role is to create a warm and inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable participating.
Hosts help by:
Encouraging everyone to take part in the conversation
Keeping the discussion flowing naturally
Offering gentle grammar corrections when appropriate
Helping maintain a respectful and friendly atmosphere
No formal teaching is required—just a love of conversation and a desire to help others feel welcome.
Who Can Become a Host?
To volunteer as a host, you should:
Be a native English speaker or have advanced English proficiency (B2 level or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; no certificate is required)
Feel comfortable guiding group conversations
Have empathy and strong interpersonal skills
Have a background in education or similar experience working with groups
Be available to participate according to the MEL calendar during your stay in Mérida
Stay in communication with the library office to coordinate your schedule
