Join us for these exciting and informative activities between October and March:
Artist Studio Tour – The library’s Artist Studio Tour is back after a two year COVID-induced hiatus, and we’re excited to present the 2023 edition on Feb 18 & 19. Visit more than 40 local and international artists in three dozen studios during the 19th edition of this self-guided tour. Walk, bike, bus, taxi or ride-share your way around Mérida, meet new and favorite artists and take home some unique artwork. Here is a map of the studios on the 2020 tour.
Monthly Wine Tasting - To life, to love, to Mérida... Salud! Monthly Wine Tastings, a fundraiser for the library, are held October through March, usually on the third Thursday. Wines presented by leading sommeliers paired with tasty tapas-sized bites created by local chefs follow a different theme each month. The venue, which changes each month, will be one of Mérida’s lovingly-restored private homes, whose generous owners enjoy entertaining and helping MEL.
Twice-monthly Art Gallery Tours - Come stroll around the historic Santa Ana barrio with us and visit a few of the many art galleries and studios in the neighborhood. We meet at the fountain in Santa Ana Park Fountain the first and third Thursday of each month during high season for a short talk, then visit a half-dozen places on foot.
Weekly House & Garden Tours - The city of Mérida has the third largest collection of colonial homes in Latin America, surpassed only by the historic centers of Havana, Cuba and Mexico City. These centuries-old residential treasures are being rescued from ruin as Merida’s Centro enjoys a renaissance.
Satisfy your curiosity! The Original MEL House & Garden Tour is a weekly walking tour, showcasing a wide variety of homes and gardens in Mérida’s Centro Historico. The properties we tour are located within a 10-20-minute walk of the library, and include houses of various styles, sizes, and ages. The House & Garden Tour is operated each Wednesday morning during high season, and is a “must do” for visitors and residents alike! It’s informative and fun!
You can see a sample tour (and learn more about MEL) by watching this YouTube video from Cafe Con Leche Travels.
MEL Talks lecture series - Join us for informative presentations on local and national history, art, archeology, home maintenance, local culture and more. The talks are held on Wednesday evenings starting at 7:00 PM either at the library or virtually via ZOOM, depending on the circumstances. Many of the lectures for the past two years are available on the library’s YouTube channel; see the lineup for more information. This is a free event and open to all.
Special Events - the library regularly holds special events and cultural activities. Recent activities included a visit to the El Nido del Avestruz ostrich ranch, a special St Patrick's Day Beer Tasting, chair aerobics, and Trova Night. Keep up-to-date at the library's website, or follow us on social media, or request to be included on the library's newsletter mailing list.
